The NOS Center is the home of many festivals, including Escape Psycho Circus—Insomniac's darkest, most theatrical production of the year. This event is different from most Insomniac events in the sense that it isn't about rainbows and unicorns. In fact, it's just the opposite. The entertainers and performers are dressed as zombies, monsters, clowns and so much more, creating an immersive horror experience that transforms the entire venue. This fest isn't for the faint-hearted—after all, it is the Escape from Beyond Wonderland.
Inside the $2 Million Asylum Experience
One of the most insane attractions for this event is the Asylum—a 15-20 minute interactive maze that pushes the boundaries of festival entertainment. Upon coming out of the Asylum, we came across a man who was part of the production team. He explained to us that Insomniac has been collecting items for it for the past five years and have spent over two million dollars on the experience. The effort shows. Walking through this maze is like walking onto a high-budget Hollywood production set. There is so much attention to detail as far as the set design, lighting effects, and actor performances go—every corner reveals another layer of the nightmare.
What to Expect: The Full Commitment
They have really nailed the time period in which it is supposed to take place—a decrepit early 1900s psychiatric hospital—as well as going the extra mile in hiring theatrical staff who stay in character throughout. You must sign a waiver before going into the maze, as they put you in a straight jacket and a hockey mask to really make you feel as though you have been committed. From start to finish, it really is an experience to be had. The actors will separate groups, touch you (within appropriate boundaries, of course), and make you question every turn you take.
Pro Tips for Surviving the Wait
Of course, the downside is the lengthy wait time to go through the maze depending on when you get in line. We're talking anywhere from 45 minutes to 2+ hours during peak times. But like anything amazing, it is well worth the wait. However, the staff understands that it is a very long wait and they throw water bottles into the crowd every hour or so, to ensure no one gets dehydrated while waiting in line.
Strategic Planning for Your Asylum Visit
My best advice for this is to get to the event as early as possible and get in line before it gets too crazy—ideally within the first hour of gates opening. I would also grab a drink or some food to snack on from the vendors before getting in line because that can make the time go by faster. Pro tip: wear comfortable rave bottoms and shoes since you'll be standing for a while, then moving quickly through the maze. Another way to pass the time would be to download Heads Up onto your phone or playing charades with your crew. After all, you are there with your rave fam or babe, why not make the most of it? Use the wait time to plan your matching rave outfits for next year or swap festival stories.
The Secret Speakeasy: Your Reward for Surviving
For those fortunate enough to survive the maze, there is an extra special surprise at the end for those Asylum patients that are 21 and over. There is a seriously kick-ass Asian themed bar that awaits you—a hidden gem that most festival-goers don't even know exists. Complete with awesome music, good vibes, and speakeasy-type decor, it's a good way to decompress after getting the PLUR scared out of you for the last 20 minutes. The bartenders serve up themed cocktails, and the intimate space feels like a reward for the brave. It's the perfect spot to catch your breath, share your experience with fellow survivors, and maybe even meet some new rave fam who understand what you just went through.
How Scary Is It Really? A Reality Check
For those of you that are afraid that the Asylum will be too scary, not to worry. The staff is mostly playful and as long as you play along with them it takes the edge off. Think of it like improv theater where you're part of the show. That being said, be sure to follow directions or the staff will do what they please with you—all in good fun, of course. But be warned, if you act scared they naturally gravitate towards you and mess with you. Screamers and those who show fear become the target. It is important to remember throughout that it isn't real and everything is intended in good fun. The actors are professionals who know exactly how far to push without crossing lines.
What to Wear Into the Asylum
Since you'll be put in a straight jacket over your outfit, keep your rave outfits practical for this attraction. Save the elaborate rave bodysuits and detailed ensembles for the main stages. Instead, opt for comfortable layers that won't get tangled or damaged. The maze can get warm with body heat from crowds, so breathable festival tops are your best bet. And if you're planning to document the experience, secure your phone—things get chaotic in there.
